Aquatic Activities - Children

The swimming lessons offered by the Complexe aquatique Michel-Leduc (Aquadôme) are those in the Canadian Red Cross program.

Our aquatic programming for children is distributed among the three programs listed below. In each program there is a list of the courses in it with descriptions. Please use the "Registration" tab at the top of this page to view the schedules, the fees and the number of places available, or to register.

 

Pre-School Swimming

The PRE-SCHOOL SWIMMING program consists of eight levels and is meant for children between the ages of 4 months and 5 years.  These very young swimmers can progress through the different levels according to their age and their abilities.

Flotation aids permitted: back float, hippo swim belt or flotation swimsuit
Flotation aids not permitted: "Swim aid" and life jacket (personal flotation device or PFD)

STARFISH (4 to 18 months)
With a parent in the water

Duration : 25 minutes
The baby must be able to hold his head up straight, without help

Your baby will get used to the water; he will learn to float and move onto his front, onto his back and into a vertical position, as well as to enter and exit shallow water.
"Little Swimmer" type diaper is obligatory

 

DUCK (18 to 30 months)
With a parent in the water

Duration : 25 minutes
Flotation aid suggested

Your baby will learn: rhythmic breathing; to move backwards and forwards with help; to float on his front and back; to roll over; to enter and exit shallow water.
“Little Swimmer” type diaper is obligatory

 

SEA TURTLE (30 to 36 months)
Avec parent dans l'eau

Duration: 25 minutes
Flotation aid suggested

Your baby will learn: submersion; to float and glide on his front and back; to jump into chest-deep water with help; to kick while on his front; to swim on his front.
“Little Swimmer” type diaper is obligatory


 

SEA OTTER (3 to 5 years)
With a parent in the water
(the child will gradually learn to swim without the parent)
Duration: 25 minutes

Flotation aid gradually removed, at a pace suited to the child

Your child will learn: to float and glide on his front and back; to kick while on his front with a floating object. The parent or accompanying adult will be asked to leave the pool gradually, according to their child's ability, so that he or she will learn to swim independently with their floatation device on a distance of 1 metre.



SALAMANDER (3 to 5 years)
No parent in the water

Duration: 25 minutes
No flotation aid
Pre-requisite: has met the performance criteria for the previous level (Sea Otter)

Your child will attempt his first lesson without an accompanying parent! He will improve his ability to float on his front and back and to jump into chest-deep water without help. Kicking will be added to gliding on his front and back. By the end of this level, your child will be able to swim a distance of 2 metres alone and without flotation aid.



SUN FISH (3 to 5 years)
No parent in the water

Duration: 25 minutes
No flotation aid
Pre-requisite: has met the performance criteria for the previous level (Salamander)

Your child will work on kicking and will be able to execute: glides on his front and back; deep water entries in total safety; floating in deep water; swimming with a PFD. He will swim continuously for 5 metres.
 


CROCODILE (3 to 5 years)
No parent in the water

Duration: 25 minutes
No flotation aid
Pre-requisite: has met the performance criteria for the previous level (Sun Fish)

Your child will become better at: glides on his front and back with kicking; swimming on his front and back; jumping into deep water; swimming with a PFD in deep water. He will swim continuously for 10 metres.



WHALE (3 to 5 years)
No parent in the water

Duration: 40 minutes
No flotation aid
Pre-requisite: has met the performance criteria for the previous level (Crocodile)

Your child will increase the distance of glides on his front and back with kicking, as well as swimming on his front and back. He will learn to dive from a sitting position. He will swim continuously for 15 metres.
 

Junior Swimming

The JUNIOR SWIMMING program consists of 10 levels and is meant for children aged 6 to 12. They will learn to swim, stay fit and have fun in a safe environment that encourages progress and rewards individual success.

JUNIOR 1
Duration: 25 minutes

Pre-requisite: 6 years and up
No previous swimming experience required

Swimmers will learn to: float and glide on their front and back; flutter kick (assisted); enter and exit deep water. They will learn to swim continuously for 5 metres.


JUNIOR 2
Duration: 25 minutes

Pré-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 1

Swimmers will learn to: float and glide on their front and back with flutter kick; swim on their front. They will participate in deep-water activities (assisted) and will learn to swim continuously for 10 metres.


JUNIOR 3
Duration: 25 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 2

Swimmers will increase the distance of glides on their front and back with flutter kick, flutter kick without an aid, wear a PFD in deep water and learn to float in deep water. They will learn to swim continuously for 15 metres.


JUNIOR 4
Duration: 40 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 3

Swimmers will learn to swim on their backs with shoulder rolls and the front crawl (10 metres), improve their flutter kick on their back, dive from a kneeling position and learn the basics of skulling. They will learn to swim continuously for 25 metres.


JUNIOR 5
Duration: 40 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 4

Swimmers will improve their front stroke (crawl) (15 metres), learn the back crawl (15 metres), the whip kick on their backs and the strike dive, treading water and head-first sculling on their backs. They will learn to swim continuously for 50 metres.


JUNIOR 6
Duration: 40 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 5

Swimmers will increase the distance of their front and back crawl (25 metres), tread water in the deep end and perform the front dive. They will learn the elementary back stroke (15 metres) as well as dolphin kicks. They will learn to swim continuously for 75 metres.


JUNIOR 7
Duration: 40 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 6

Swimmers will increase the distance of their front and back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and dolphin kicks. They will learn to skull and whip kick on their front. They will learn to swim continuously for 150 metres.


JUNIOR 8
Duration: 40 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 7

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back crawl (75 metres) and elementary back stroke (25 metres). They will also learn the breaststroke (15 metres) as well as whip kicks/treading water, perform feet-first surface dives and standing shallow dives. They will learn to swim continuously for 300 metres.


JUNIOR 9
Duration: 55 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 8

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres) and breast stroke (25 metres). They will learn sidestroke kicks and how to perform a head-first surface dive. They will learn to swim continuously for 400 metres.


JUNIOR 10
Duration: 55 minutes

Pre-requisites: 6 years and up and Junior 9

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres) and breast stroke (25 metres). They will also learn the sidestroke (25 metres). Plus they will learn to dolphin kick (vertically), and perform feet- and head-first surface dives with underwater swim. They will learn to swim continuously for 500 metres.
 

Teen Swimming

The TEEN SWIMMING program is for youths 12 years of age and up.  It consists of two levels of lessons, as follows: Teen Basics 1 and Teen Basics 2. Previous swimming experience is not required to register for the first level.  In this program, teens will learn to swim and become familiar with the basic swim strokes.

TEEN BASICS 1
(55 minutes)

Previous swimming experience is not required

Teens will learn to: float on their front and back; glide on their front and back using leg kicks; swim on their front for 10 metres; enter and exit deep water. They will perform activities in deep water (assisted).


TEEN BASICS 2
(55 minutes)

Pre-requisites: Some swimming experience; able to swim easily on their front for 10 metres

Teens will learn: to swim on their back with shoulder rolls; front and back crawl (15 metres); to dive from a sitting position; to dive from a kneeling position; to perform a front dive from a stop position and to tread water. They will swim for a minimum distance of 25 metres.


SWIMMING STYLES
(55 minutes)

Pre-requisites: Able to swim on the front and on the back, breathe through the mouth and the nose, kick with alternate legs while gliding on the front and on the back, swim 2 to 5 metres continuously

The aim of this course is to learn proper techniques to improve glides on the front and on the back with leg kicks, as well as several swimming styles. You will learn how to control your breathing and transfer weight.
